New design for sardinian arts & crafts of Samughéo - international competition

“This project manages to reinterpret the textile motif of the traditional saddlebag in a contemporary way, enhancing its graphic and decorative strength. The use of the “battoro in posta” (Sardinian weaving technique based on the interweaving of the weft every four warps), declined and broken down into suggestive sequences of light and dark, creates a refined and dynamic visual effect, keeping alive the cultural identity of the original motif”. With this motivation, the jury of the international ideas competition ANNODARTE 2.0, assigned to Pierluigi Piu, on March 22, 2025, in Samughéo (Sardinia, Italy), the prize for the "carpets" section. In this artifact, inspired by one of the most renowned textile motifs of Sardinian craftsmanship, the monochromatic checkerboard grid of the traditional pattern gradually thins out towards the center, to give rise to a two-tone weave of hexagons which, although composed in geometries very different from the original, does not alter its recognizability in any way.
